The Met Office has issued the equivalent of an orange warning snow and they say that the incoming weather is a “danger to life”.
The warning is valid until late tonight but it is expected to be extended.
This warning also means that there is a risk to property, risk of road closures and loss of power and electricity.
Outbreaks of rain, sleet and snow are expected this evening and overnight into the early hours of Friday morning.
Experts say that the snow will occur mainly over high ground giving accumulations, but is also possible at lower levels.
Across Britain we can expect gale gusts with bitterly cold minimum temperatures ranging -2 to -6 degrees. Widespread severe frost with extensive and hazardous icy patches are also expected.
Temperatures are expected to drop again on Friday with the potential of sleet and snow also.
