Now as much as I’d like to believe they were made by the unicorn gods up there, sadly that’s not the case.

So how has it happened?

As the ice which once covered the Vinicuna melted and the ground eroded with it, various mineral layers were exposed, leaving behind a series of colourful stripes long the ridge.

The red evolves from oxidised iron.

The yellow from the presence of iron sulphide.

The purple-brown from goethite/oxidised limonite, and the chlorite is what causes the green shades.
