An "absolutely massive" fire ripped through a partially built block of flats in Manchester last night, causing residents of nearby houses to evacuate.

Witnesses describe being able feel the scorching heat as the blaze blundered through the top floors of the high-rise building emitting huge bouts of smoke into the sky above Gorton. Local roads were also closed due to the heat caused by the fierce blaze.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service sent five fire engines to the site on Pottery Lane at 8.05pm after receiving "in excess of 40" calls from concerned locals and passers-by.

Serendipitea caught the whole thing live on Twitter causing quite a social stir.

"The flames could be seen for miles!"

Astonishing video and images of the huge fire sent in by locals showed it shooting flames hundreds of feet into the air.

The fire has subsided and the building has now been raised to the ground with just the skeleton visible.

It is not yet known what caused it.
