When I first moved up to Manchester in the summer of 2016, I was lucky enough to be living near friends who took me around Chester and Greater Manchester nearly every evening showing me different beauty spots as well as the best bars and restaurants in the area.
And unbeknownst to myself at the time, the Altrincham gem that is Mort Subite, which, by the way, translates to ‘Sudden Death,’ is something very, very special.
It doesn’t tend to revel in the glory of mass publicity, but that doesn’t stop this locally-kept secret from being absolutely flooded on Friday and Saturday nights – and some week nights too, for that matter.
The name, which translates to ‘sudden death’ in French, is what gives this place its niche and defines the underground bar which was in fact once an old hospital morgue.
Sounds creepy, right?
But – it’s actually very glamorous – and the drinks have so much oomph you’d think they have the potential to revive an actual corpse.
This gaff specialises in German beer – the proper stuff, plus some exotic fruity concoctions too. Different varieties of Kriek Boon feature heavily, as well as Saison Dupont and Mongozo.
They’re not big on the cocktail scene – but come here with an open mind and a view to sampling something different and you’ll be good to go.
The decor is creepy verging on horror movie-esque, the ambiance is rich, sultry and moodily romantic and the drinks are heavy, strong and hedonistic.
The place is scarily addictive and once you’ve been once you’ll be back again and again.
You’ll find Mort Subite at 28-32 Greenwood St, Altrincham WA14 1RZ and for bookings and for more information you can call the venue on 07512 969619.
