Manchester City Council Announce Date For Switching On Of Santa's Lights
Welcome back Zippy...
Earlier today, we told you that the giant Santa which has been a fixture of Christmas in Manchester since 2007 has returned to Albert Square.
We can now announce that there will be an official switch-on of his 100,000 low-energy LED lights on Friday November 4th. If it's anything like last year's event (pictured below) we're in for a treat.
Speaking about the event, Councillor Pat Karney, Manchester’s Christmas spokesperson, said:
“We all know that Manchester is Santa’s favourite city and our giant Santa is an ode to the main man. However you know him - Zippy or otherwise - He’s become a real icon of our festive celebrations and a favourite of the millions of people who visit the city during the Christmas Markets.
Santa will be taking his usual spot at town hall ready for our Christmas lights switch-on event on Friday 4 November– but in the meantime follow him on twitter for his unique perspective on Christmas in Manchester.”
As always, the six tonne Father Christmas will be tweeting about his festive experiences in Manchester and you can follow him at @MCRSanta.
Fittingly, he possesses a typical Mancunian wit but try and catch him before January as he gets a bit cranky after Christmas:
