One of the biggest moorland fires on record, described by witnesses as “apocalyptic” has broken out on Saddleworth Moor.
Firefighters are still hard at work at the moor and the glow can be seen for miles and smoke is in the air in the area with residents rising early to catch a glimpse.
Those living nearby are being warned to keep all of their windows and doors firmly shut until the incident has been fully dealt with.
According to experts the fire began at approximately 7.30pm Tuesday evening and has covered 1.5 square km of land at Marsden – with the current milder weather and high winds making the blaze far trickier to deal with.
Multiple units of firefighters have been on the scene all night and extra pumps have been sent this morning to continue the work.
There have been no injury reports as of yet and the A62 has been shut between Diggle and Colne Valley.
