Project ‘Lightwaves’ has arrived to Media City UK and will be here until 18th December this year – featuring stunning work from a repertoire of new artists as well as those talented and established across the globe.
9 artworks currently span the length of The Quays across the Plaza and Lowry Outlet to Media City UK’s Piazza – and look out for a special display in the River Irwell too!
One of the 9 beautiful displays to feature is Aether & Hemera’s Voyage – home 198 origami boats! The boats float majestically atop the water boasting interactive lights which visitors can control (changing the pattern and even colour) using their mobile phones.
Today I Love You is a deeply-felt, poetic piece created by Massimo Uberti & Marco Pollice – the artwork which stand proud atop Media City’s Piazza, though it was actually commissioned for Amsterdam’s Light Festival in 2015. The presentation of this work marks the beginning of an official partnership between Quays Culture and Amsterdam Light Festival.
And, in true Blackpool fashion, world famous illuminations light up the waterside and the gardens – creating a stunning vision highly visible from a distance.
To add a little fun, Postman Pat, Spongebob and Noddy feature in the displays – a family-friendly experince – and what’s more, entry’s completely free.
Create your own light
That’s right, The Quays will be hosting a workshop in the Lowry outlet for those interested in their own light graffiti. We wonder what the likes of Tank Petrol would think to this new-age development…
Using LED and time-lapse tech know-how, this workshop will capture the movements of volunteers within the space and result in a special photo which you’ll have the option to download and keep.
Sessions for the workshop run between Friday and Sunday (inclusive) between 12 and 2.30 pm and 4.30 and 7.30pm.
To keep up to date with the latest, follow the conversation on social and share your own experience (and stunning pictures) with the hastag #Lightwaves16.
