Firefighters still tackling a moorland fire on Winter Hill near Bolton, Greater Manchester, were perplexed by a family wanting to start a BBQ in the area.

Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service, who were assisted by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service when the blaze began, said they were busy extinguishing hot spots on the moors when a family turned up wanting to light a disposable BBQ.

A spokesperson for LFRS said: “Hard to comprehend, but a report’s just come in from our firefighters still at the Winter Hill fire, busy extinguishing ‘hot spots’, that they had to intervene and turn away a family who thought it would be ok to light a disposable barbecue up there.

“Not malicious, but !!!!???.”

However, it’s not the first time this has happened this month. On July 4, Lancashire Fire said they discovered a used BBQ on the hill after the fire had started.

Despite the rain across the North West today, the fire on Winter Hill has yet to be extinguished fully.

The fire started at the beginning of July.
