Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has announced he has asked the army for help to fight the Saddleworth moor fire, the BBC reports.

The fire has been burning in the Greater Manchester moorlands for three days, measuring a staggering 3.7miles.

Residents in Carrbrook, near Stalybridge, have already been evacuated following the blaze.

Smoke has been lingering in nearby areas, as far as Manchester city centre, causing smells of burning and a faint haze.
