When news broke earlier this week that Ariana Grande would be headlining this year’s Manchester Pride Live event many fans (us included) were overjoyed. The pop star has not performed in Manchester since the One Love charity concert two years ago.

However, whilst many of us were elated to hear the singer would be returning to our city, many felt that she was the wrong choice for this event.

One user on Twitter expressed their concern saying “Ariana headlining pride when she’s straight...and doubling the price tickets, kinda smells like exploitation of the lgbt community to me…”

This initial tweet has been liked 73K times and has 16K retweets, meaning there are a lot of people out there who share this same sentiment.

Ariana herself caught wind of this discussion and decided to release her own statement regarding the situation.

Ariana explained that she does not set the tickets rates and that while she does identify as straight, the LGBTQ community has been such a support to her throughout her career that she wanted to give make. She also made the point that “straight allies like Cher and Kylie Minogue” have also headlined similar LGBTQ events in the past.

Ariana’s fans have come out in support of the singer praising her for always being an ally to the community, with one fan even claiming that Ariana “helped [him] come out”.

It’s safe to say, while there may be some concern over Ariana Grande's headline slot, the majority of us cannot wait to see the pop star give the show of a lifetime at Manchester Pride Live.
