Ariana Grande Responds To Criticism Over Her Manchester Pride Headline Slot
The singers headline slot at this year’s Manchester Pride event was questioned
When news broke earlier this week that Ariana Grande would be headlining this year’s Manchester Pride Live event many fans (us included) were overjoyed. The pop star has not performed in Manchester since the One Love charity concert two years ago.
However, whilst many of us were elated to hear the singer would be returning to our city, many felt that she was the wrong choice for this event.
One user on Twitter expressed their concern saying “Ariana headlining pride when she’s straight...and doubling the price tickets, kinda smells like exploitation of the lgbt community to me…”
This initial tweet has been liked 73K times and has 16K retweets, meaning there are a lot of people out there who share this same sentiment.
idk .... ariana headlining pride when she’s straight (as far as we’re all aware) .... and doubling the price of tickets .... kinda smells like exploitation of the lgbt community to me .....— s (@raininjulyvinyl) February 25, 2019
just to make it clear i’m not blaming ariana ! i know she’s done so much for manchester etc so i understand the sentiment behind it, and i know there’s management and organisation staff involved so it’s not her fault about prices or anything— s (@raininjulyvinyl) February 26, 2019
i just find it a bit weird/uncomfortable when it’s a festival celebrating being proud of your lgbt identity and then a straight artist is chosen to be the headliner and ‘face’ of the whole event— s (@raininjulyvinyl) February 26, 2019
Ariana herself caught wind of this discussion and decided to release her own statement regarding the situation.
Ariana explained that she does not set the tickets rates and that while she does identify as straight, the LGBTQ community has been such a support to her throughout her career that she wanted to give make. She also made the point that “straight allies like Cher and Kylie Minogue” have also headlined similar LGBTQ events in the past.
i saw many people discussing this so i wanted to chime in.... hope that’s okay 🖤🌫 pic.twitter.com/7joiZwI1QS— Ariana Grande (@ArianaGrande) February 27, 2019
Ariana’s fans have come out in support of the singer praising her for always being an ally to the community, with one fan even claiming that Ariana “helped [him] come out”.
i hate that u even had to explain this bc everybody who knows u & has followed ur journey since the beginning would know how much you love n support our community. you’ve always been an ally for us & you’ve done so much for us. you helped me come out & many more of us. ily— ً (@tliclea) February 27, 2019
i cant wait to see u at pride.. cant wait to see one of my favorite people at a time where i can be myself nd love my sexuality... see u in august ❤️❤️— brad ⚰️ (@imhkarla) February 27, 2019
so so well spoken. regardless of how u identify, ur voice is heard, so u can (& do) speak out on lgbtq rights ALL THE TIME. which is why u deserve to headline. u don’t have this role in society for nothing, & u know it, and we all know how important this is to u. we love u. sm.— julia (@needyari1) February 27, 2019
It’s safe to say, while there may be some concern over Ariana Grande's headline slot, the majority of us cannot wait to see the pop star give the show of a lifetime at Manchester Pride Live.
