Online streaming platform, Hulu, is set to release a new anthology true crime series, The Act, starring Patricia Arquette and Joey King.

The series follows the true story of Mother Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose, a disturbing tale that was captured in the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.

Today, Hulu has released the trailer for the series and it looks intense. Check it out for yourself below:

The outline of the first series is as follows: “Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder”.

The screenplay was written by Michelle Dean and Nick Antosca based on Dean’s viral article for Buzzfeed “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom To Be Murdered”.

The Act will follow the real-life the murder of Dee Dee in 2015, who was murdered by her own “sick” daughter, Gypsy. However, Gypsy claims her mother made her a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy and was making her “sick”.

This was Gypsy’s defence. She claimed her mother held her against her will and forced her to take medications to convince her she was unwell. Dee Dee had claimed her daughter had leukaemia, epilepsy, hearing loss, sleep apnea, asthma, muscular dystrophy and chromosomal defects.

Gypsy was confined to a wheelchair and was forced to have a feeding tube. Dee Dee even shaved Gypsy's head to make her look sick, and told friends and neighbours that her daughter had the mental capacity of a seven-year old.

All of this turned out to false - Gypsy was never ill.

One day in June 2015, Dee Dee’s Facebook account posted an update.

“The Bitch is dead”, it read.

A comment on the status posted from Dee Dee’s account later insinuated that Dee Dee had been “slashed” and that Gypsy had also been attacked by this 'unknown perpetrator'.

Worried friends and neighbours quickly went over to the residence before calling 911. When police entered they found Dee Dee’s body in her room, having been murdered several days prior.

Gypsy was nowhere to be found, however all her wheelchairs were still at the residence.

As the investigation went on, all the lies the family had woven began to untangle.

It was revealed that Gypsy had begun a secret relationship with a boy online, in fact, it soon came to light that Gypsy was never ill, it had all been a ruse that her “mother made her do”.

The true story of their lives is utterly disturbing. You really need to read Dean’s Longform deep dive into the case here to understand the full breadth of it. You will not regret it.

It will be as interesting as it is horrifying to see this “unbelievable” true story play out on our screens. I can already see this being one of the biggest True Crime series of the year.

The Act is set to be released on Hulu’s streaming service on March 20, 2019.
