Breaking up is NEVER easy. Whether you’re the one getting dumped or the one doing it, ending a relationship will usually always lead to tears.

Do you tell a lie about how you’re just “not ready right now”? Do you go straight in and just tell them it’s not working out or do you ease it out for a few weeks of ignoring until they get the hint?

The best way to break up with someone has been revealed…

Research from Brigham Young University and the University of South Alabama has actually show that most people prefer the direct approach when they receive bad news.

In the study, 145 people were told different types of bad news and found that people values clarity and directness.

When it comes to social relationships however, a “buffer” is best

“An immediate ‘I’m breaking up with you’ might be too direct,” lead study author Alan Manning, linguistics professor at Brigham Young University, explained. “But all you need is a ‘we need to talk’ buffer—just a couple of seconds for the other person to process that bad news is coming.”

“If you’re on the giving end, yeah, absolutely, it’s probably more comfortable psychologically to pad it out—which explains why traditional advice is the way it is,” Manning added. “But this survey is framed in terms of you imagining you’re getting bad news and which version you find least objectionable. People on the receiving end would much rather get it this way.”

So break it gently, yeah?
