United In The Market For New Central Defender

Room for two Josés at Old Trafford?

With Eric Bailly impressing in his fledgling Manchester United career so far, he may soon be joined by a new central defensive partner.

Southampton and Portugal centre-back José Fonte is said to be flattered at interest from the Old Trafford club, telling ESPN:

"If the interest is there, it is a reason to be flattered to be associated with a club like Manchester United."

"But I have a contract with Southampton, and I'm just focused on my work, to make a great season. I will not deny that Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world and that it makes me happy to be associated with it. But to be Manchester United's player is a big difference."

Fonte has been with Southampton since they played in League 1, helping them to two successive promotions in 2011 and 2012.

The 32-year-old was a vital member of the successful Portugal team at EURO 2016 this summer and has earned 16 caps for his country.
