Southampton Manager Doesn't Rule Out Fonte Move To Old Trafford

The two sides meet on Friday night...

Southampton manager Claude Puel has spoken of his frustration at rumours linking his captain José Fonte with a move to Old Trafford.

The two clubs face off on Friday night and the incoming Southampton manager didn't rule out a transfer taking place:

"There is no problem with José, it is just strange that this rumour comes just before the game at United. José has good experience, so he cannot be disturbed by this rumour but I am just surprised to hear this before the game, two days before the match. But José is our captain and I'm sure he will be completely ready for this game."

32-year-old Fonte would join up with his compatriot in the form of United Manager José Mourinho were he to complete a move to Old Trafford before the end of the transfer window.

A late bloomer in the game, Fonte joined The Saints from Crystal Palace in 2010 when they were languishing in League 1. Two successive promotions followed and Fonte was named captain in August 2014 with Southampton now established as a Premier League club.

His performances have been rewarded with international honours and he was a vital member of the Porugal team which won EURO 2016, forming a strong central defensive partnership with Real Madrid's Pepe as they beat hosts France in the final.
