WATCH: The Winning Goal and All The Brilliant Reaction From The EFL Cup Manchester Derby

José 1-1 Pep

Derby1

In the build-up to the game United manager José Mourinho spoke of living a lonely life in a Manchester hotel while his family have remained in London. So win or lose, at least he got himself out for the evening.

The teams were released prior to kick off and it seemed Mourinho had gone for a stronger side than his City counterpart Pep Guardiola:

Manchester United: De Gea, Valencia, Rojo, Blind, Shaw, Carrick, Herrera, Mata, Pogba, Rashford, Ibrahimovic

Manchester City: Caballero, Maffeo, Otamendi, Kompany, Clichy, Fernando, Nolito, Aleix Garcia, Navas, Sane, Iheanacho

As always in Manchester these days, all eyes were on the two glamorous managers...

Tensions were high pre-match as the sights, sounds and erm... smells of Old Trafford made for a great atmosphere...

True to form, in a dull first half, it was referee Mike Dean who garnered most of the attention...

While City's youngsters were impressing...

But other than that, it was as dull as dishwater...

Out of nowhere, United came flying out of the blocks in the second half...

Before taking the lead through Juan Mata on 54 minutes...

People expected a typical change of tactics from Mourinho...

But unusually, United kept attacking...

Not all managers have the luxury of bringing on one of the world's best strikers in a bid to save a game...

United held on to seal the win thanks mostly to some fancy ballwork...

And finally, José begged for forgiveness...

So United gained revenge for their 2-1 defeat at the hands of City earlier in the season.

City have now gone six games without a win and having been knocked out of the EFL Cup, can now only chase three trophies this season.

The Red Devils were drawn to play at home to West Ham United in the quarter finals with the game likely to take place on Wednesday November 30th.
