We love a spot of afternoon tea – it’s a great treat for yourself and your girlfriends, yourself and bae (if you can convince him to come along) or you and the mummy. But sometimes the offering can just get a little samey and the lack of diversity makes the elaborate-ness and expense rather difficult to justify.
But add gin in to the mix and and you may just be looking at a match made in heaven.
Luckily for us, a Manchester hotel has cooked up a brand new menu addition to cure our desire for both.

But, recently celebrating its one-year anniversary, the venue launched a new Evening Tea menu complete with extended opening hours until 7pm.
The new Evening ‘Gin Tea’ menu features a selection of delicate sandwiches and hot savouries, including Ox Cheek and Blue Cheese croquettes. Also included is a selection of cakes, alongside the afternoon tea favourite, a scone with clotted cream and a choice of Mrs Darlington’s jams. The menu also offers a pairing of two gins, including Manchester Three Rivers, to complement the savoury and sweet elements.
I opted for the vegan menu with the gin accompaniments and the quality of the food was absolutely stand-out.
On first glance, I have to admit I was a little disappointed as there didn’t look to be too much food and we were absolutely starving. But I was surprised to find that after happily munching my way through the first tier (hot tempura deep fried vegetables with the most glorious freshly-made beetroot dip) I was already getting pretty full.
The second layer of freshly-made sandwiches were generously crammed full of mediterranean veg, spices, a delicious black olive crumble and homemade houmous and each bite was absolutely heavenly.
They do have all the usuals on their menu also – smoked salmon finger sambos, buttermilk scones with preserve etc etc, and the whole thing comes in at £35 per person.
An assortment of home-baked cakes made up the dessert section of the experience and you could tell so much care and attention had been given to each individual piece that they were more akin to little works of art than actual food. Sweet options included:
– Cashew Nut ‘Cheesecake’ with Lemon Curd
– Avocado & Dark Chocolate Tart
– Lime & Dark Chocolate Macaroon
– Banana Cake with Caramelised Hazelnuts
I thought I was going to have to ask to box a few up with me but they were so moreishly delicious I ended up demolishing the lot. Highly recommend.
