Jesus - This Is Easily The Most Disappointing Steak I've Ever Eaten

I left the place absolutely starving with a tenner down the drain

For most of us eating out is a huge treat. I don't know about you but I find it hard not to veer towards a steak when I see it on a menu. While you could easily cook steak at home there is something exciting about eating it in a restaurant and knowing it has been cooked by a professional chef who is invariably going to cook it better than you ever could yourself.

Well that's the theory anyway but often even the pros get it wrong. After a quick scan of the menu in Pen And Pencil and after spotting steak and eggs I was doubly sold. Sure it was the middle of the week and I probably shouldn't be eating brunch on a Tuesday but "fuck it" I thought, I'm going big. The fact that I was absolutely starving probably played into my decision for going for one of the great brunch style dishes.

What showed up after a 15-minute wait was like a tapas style portion. I actually couldn't believe my eyes at the size of it. £9.50 looked like good value on the menu but I had 4 tiny pieces of meat on the plate, a minuscule piece of hash brown-style potatoes and two eggs that were barely bigger than their yolk. This was style over substance in every sense of the word.

I've eaten here before and it was fine but on this occasion - if the portion size was bad then the quality of the meat was a disaster. Two of the pieces of meat were so gristly and tough that I had to leave them. In total it had taken me about 90 seconds to finish the dish. I've had bigger canapés at an event than this supposed brunch dish.

I could have ordered something else to fill me up but quite frankly after spending £12 on this (including a coke) I couldn't get out of the place quick enough. I walked straight across the road and got a sandwich and a coffee to fill me up and banish the thought of that "meal" as quickly as I could.

When it comes to food I don't think people mind paying over the odds for high-end produce and a great experience. On the other hand paying a tenner for something this small leaves a horrible taste in the mouth (metaphorically speaking) and I left saying I'd never be back.

Steak and eggs is one of the world's great dishes when done right. This wasn't even close to what it should look like. I walked out the door both starving and feeling like a mug. Never a good feeling.
