This Vegan Meal Is Better Than Anything Else You'll Eat In The Northern Quarter This Month

And that's coming from a meat eater...


I’m not a vegan. Or even a vegetarian.

Nor am I taking part in Veganuary or any veggie-based equivalents.

So when a couple of friends dragged me along to the Northern Quarter’s newest vegan restaurant - Folk & Soul - I wouldn’t say I was hyped about proceedings.

Vegan matters aside, the truth is that I’m never particularly hyped about eating out in the Northern Quarter any more. Long gone are the days of 2 -3 years ago, when the NQ’s food was in it’s prime and represented seriously good value.

Prices have gone up, and the quality down. In my humble opinion, at least.

Anyway - I digress. Folk & Soul:

A beautiful, clean and modern space; I sat myself down and got comfortable, taking a look at the menu before choosing a range of dishes recommended by our lovely waitress Hannah.

Thankfully it was not just me eating, but a Vegan and a Vegetarian too so we could really give it the taste test (and try out more food obvs...)

To start we got the Mix and Dips as well as the Courgette Bruschetta.


Both were delicious, but if I had to choose? The Mix and Dips are the one; pitta, hummus, guac, olives, arancini and falafal - it really did have it all. The star of the starters was the Arancini which is spinach, sunflower seeds and mild curry spices. And the drool literally just splashed my keyboard as I’m recollecting it.

Now for the mains and we went for three, which after the starters was very ambitious. I have to say, the pasta with courgette, wild mushrooms and cashew ricotto would put any italian place to shame and I -surprisingly- did not miss the cheese.


If you are feeling like a healthier low carb italian dish then the Baked Aubergine parmigiana is not to be missed. Full of tomato-ey goodness, packed with flavour and guilt free cheese this has to be the best vegan dish I have ever tasted. This places makes you not miss meat!

For me, the star of the mains had to be the Oyseter Mushroom ‘wings’ served with mash and gravy. So good that they had to return them to the menu after regulars stated they missed them too much! And I can see why…..

From the Vegan, Vegetarian and the Meat Eater - we are all in tandem when we say that Folk & Soul is one of the best and most underrated spots in Manchester right now.
