Ok, so we’ll be the first to admit that the city of Salford doesn’t exactly boast the same white, sandy shores and azul-blue sea as the jewelled Caribbean beaches over the other side of our little planet (not to mention the distinct absence of Johnny Depp around these parts.)
But let’s make the most of what we’ve got now shall we?
The weather’s just been giving and giving in our humble city of late, so we figured what better time than take a nice, gentle (sub: rocky, booze-filled) evening cruise down and around Greater Manchester and Salford Quays – in a little adventure called ‘The Gincident,’ brought to us by the swashbuckling mischievousness of The Liquorists.
Who are The Liquorists?
A range of cocktail cruises are the brainchild of these cheeky chappies – and whatever your poison, be it rum, gin, vino or whisky – the likelihood is that there’ll be a cruise to suit all your booze-filled hopes and dreams.
We embarked on The Gincident one Friday evening – but little did we know it’s far from just your standard cruise. From the word go, you’re lurched (quite literally) into an in-depth evening of entertainment, banter and laughter all focused on that one spirit to rule them all.
For the ticket price of between £50-£70 (depending on the evening) you’ll enjoy seven heady gin-based drinks – 2 long and refreshing G&Ts and 5 cocktails – with the aim of showcasing the diversity of the spirit, plus huge sharing platters of cured meats, cheeses, freshly baked bread, chutneys, crackers, pickles and and piles of balsamic onions – the absolute definition of summer aboard.

If you’re on the #Gincident this weekend you’re in for a treat! For those of you Cocktail Experts or previous Gincident attendees, you’ll have probably had a cocktail with a frothy/foamy top which is achieved with Egg Whites. Well this year, we’ve stopped using Egg Whites and now use a Vegan friendly foaming agent known as Ms. Better’s Bitters @bettersbitters It doesn’t have the same protein continent however, so those of you looking for hashtag gains, soz
We won’t spoil the surprise too much, but aboard the cruise you’ll learn all about the quintessential British spirit, and how, contrary to popular opinion, its origins lie far, far away from these humble shores.
Over the 3-hour excursion you’ll be taken on a journey through the history of gin in the most interactive way possible, from the so-called ‘Gin Craze’ of the 17th Century right the way through to the modern era – with the biggest selection of high quality Juniper based spirits the world has ever seen…
And of course, while learning about how gin has changed our drinking habits, our society and even our language – you’ll be privvy to an array of different drinks (which you’ll sip for research purposes only of course) as you investigate how versatile the gins we have at our disposal are, and how varied the category has become.
Started in 2010, the very first foray into Cocktail Cruises was the gin-themed cruise around Greater Manchester, but The Liquorists also now offer the Bourbon Whiskey laced Mississippi Blues Cruise and the Rum Runner’s Revenge.

If Rum is your ting (see what I did there?) then we’ve got another weekend of the Rum Runners Revenge planned for August 17th and 18th! Check the Eventbrite link in our bio and come drink some Mai Tais, Rum Tings and 5 other delicious Rum Cocktails whilst taking in the tranquil waters of Manchester. Oh and Jamaican food straight from @jerkshacknq . . It’s a Kracken Day out ????
The tables are typically set in groups of 4-6 – but they do offer exclusive hire options too – if you’re thinking ahead for a Christmas party or special birthday celebration.
