We’re sure most of you have walked up and down Deansgate many times on your way to work or on a night out. But how often have you sampled some of the restaurants and bars that Deansgate has to offer?

A lot of the time, Deansgate can be seen as a bit posh and pretentious. If I ever suggested to my friends a place for us to eat that was anywhere near the main Manchester road, I’d be hit with questions like: ‘Won’t that be expensive?’ or ‘Can’t we go somewhere a bit cheaper?’

Lunya, located on Deansgate towards the end of Market Street, breaks that mould.

Lunya is Manchester’s authentic, family-run Catalan restaurant, deli and bar, specialising in expertly sourced dishes and produce directly from Spain. And we were able to taste some of the incredible new dishes from their new summer menu update.

Pan fried salt-cod

The new and exciting collection of tapas dishes is inspired by owners Peter and Elaine’s latest food adventures in Catalonia and all over the country.

The update also includes lots of vegan variations, a development on Lunya’s already strong vegan and vegetarian offering – something that has proved popular with their customers.

For starters, they offered us a surprisingly delightful selection of Egg flavoured crisps. Yes… egg flavoured crisps. More specifically, fried egg crisps.

They genuinely tasted like the whites of fried eggs. A bizarre yet tasty snack that Peter said had been brought over especially from Spain. (I even went to their deli after the meal and bought some of my own).

And then, onto the mains. Each dish had a completely different flavour from the previous, often what you’d hope for with a strong Tapas menu, and not only that, but even the vegetarian and vegan options tasted as good (if not better) than their meat alternatives.

My personal favourite was their own take on the British classic, Beans On Toast, the Pincho Moruno. Their vegetarian option for this dish is served instead with a slice of thick, home-baked bread.

Lunya’s Summer Dishes

Pincho Moruno – gently spiced skewers of chicken, fillet steak, onions & peppers, grilled on the plancha and dressed with a smoked paprika mayonnaise.

Botifarra amb Mongetas – Catalan sausage and beans with Lunya’s own home-made baked beans and a Catalan sausage made with escalivada.

(Also available as vegan dish)

Grilled Chicken – herb marinated & grilled chicken thigh, served on a bed of Catalan Romesco sauce.

Spring Lamb Chops – marinated with Za’atar, grilled and served with crushed minted peas and piquillo pepper hummus.

Seabass – pan-fried Menai seabass, served on a bed of soft Navarran white beans, peas and chorizo.

Each dish has been specially curated by Elaine and Peter

Bacalao – pan-fried salt-cod, topped with a toasted garlic mousseline and served on samfaina (Catalan ratatouille).

Beef Sliders – Lunya’s own made rare-breed mini beef burgers, topped with melted cheddar cheese and caramelised onions.

Guisantes y Panceta – Fresh garden peas, sautéed with smoked Leon pancetta and shallots.
