Those on the hunt for a blast of nostalgia while enjoying some fine food and beer need look no further.
Hold Fast, located at Hatters Hostel on Newton Street in the Northern Quarter, is a nautical-themed bar and along with its curious decor and great atmosphere it possesses one of the most prized assets of a teen growing up in the late 90s and early 2000s.
That’s right, a Nintendo 64 console takes pride of place in the venue and it really makes for a great day or night out with mates.
You’ll barely feel the hours slipping by as you go hell for leather on Mario Kart while enjoying some of the best craft beer available in this city.
Bargain hunters could do worse than turning up for Happy Hour between 4pm and 7pm every day when two spirit & mixers cost just £6. It’s the same price for house for two house beers and ciders and two deckhand cocktails are 9 quid. Full drinks menu can be checked out here.

Also during Happy Hour, there’s free popcorn keep your appetite at bay before tucking into one of the great dinners they have on their food menu.
While playing video games in a hostel basement and drinking beer/munching popcorn sounds like something you’d do in a dingy student gaff, the idea isn’t as dank as it sounds…
The building is a former bowler hat factory (hence the ‘Hatters Hostel’) and the walls of Hold Fast are embellished with mythical sea creatures and other curious little oddities.

To be honest, even without the plethora of top-class food and drink available, we’d visit Hold Fast in a heartbeat just to get our fix of Mario Kart. With all the annoying responsibilities that come with being an adult, it’s nice to be taken back to the simpler times of our childhood via one of the greatest and most addictive video games of all time. Throw in a great atmosphere, friendly staff and very tempting food and drinks menus and you’ve got the makings for a brilliant day or night (or both!) in a great pub.
We’ve been down there a few times now and our personal best Mario speeds are getting quicker and quicker. If anyone out there wants to challenge us, give us a shout in the comments and we’ll meet you at this great Northern Quarter haunt!
