There are dozens of cool bars in Manchester, each with its own method for drawing in the crowds. But the old fashioned pub quiz is proving ever-popular, as these packed-out boozers show.

10. Oink! Punk Bingo, The Blue Pig, High Street

Quiz Highlights: If you’re not much of a brainbox but do like a spot of friendly competition to jazz up your drinking sessions, The Blue Pig’s Oink! Punk Bingo could be what you’ve been looking for. Full marks for combing this with a 60s themed playlist.

The Fine Print: Billed as “energetic” this Thursday night quiz is £1pp to play and includes a free shot of tequila.

9. Apotheca, Thomas Street

Quiz Highlights: With free pizza at this brain box bonanza, Apotheca's a decent option. The winner walks away with a candy pizza, and you have extra study time this month while the venue is closed for a spruce up.

The Fine Print: While traditionally held on a Sunday, new quiz nights are TBC when Apotheca re-opens.

8. Quizmodo, Odd Bar, Thomas Street, Northern Quarter & Oddest Bar Wilbrahim Road, Cholrton

Quiz Highlights: Boasting a “a multi-media extravaganza of knowledge and stupidity” this isn’t Mastermind. In fact organisers describe Quizmodo as the love child of fun and science. Held simultaneously across two locations, this quiz has a great reputation for mid-week laughs. 

The Fine Print: Held at Odd Bar and Oddest Bar, 8pm every Wednesday, but places fill up fast.

7. Zoo, Grosvenor Street

Quiz Highlights: Should you find the grey matter struggling to re-boot after the weekend, then this Sunday night sesh could give you a boost before the week begins. With more than 70 ales on offer, plus a happy hour and roll over cash prizes, it’s one for the serious masterminds.

The Fine Print: Starts at 8.30 every Sunday/ £1pp to play. Prizes include “money, beer and pride.”

6. Quizzly Bears at Abel Heywood, Turner Street

Quiz Highlights: With a different theme each fortnight, previous topics have included Harry Potter, Brit Pop and Marvel. This one's popular so booking in advance or buying tickets online is recommended.

The Fine Print: Starts 8pm, £2pp to play or £10 for a team of six.

5. The Pen and Pencil, Hilton and Tarrif St.

Quiz Highlights: If you prefer a cocktail to get the grey matter going, the Pen and Pencil is for you. 

The Fine Print: £1pp to play with a round of drinks for the best team name, wild card round chosen via Twitter poll and a winner-takes-all approach to the final pot of gold.

4. Ordstall Hall

Quiz Highlights: While this quiz isn’t held at a pub it does promise to provide some great ghoulish laughs and a fun afternoon pre-Hallowe’en. 

The Fine Print: This spooktacular quiz takes place between 23 – 25 October at 1 – 4pm on Sunday and 10 – 4pm Monday and Tuesday.

3. Band on The Wall  

Quiz Highlights: If your specialist subject is music then Band on The Wall has the quiz for you. The quiz is hosted by Elliot Eastwick who's also held quizzes at Glastonbury for Coldplay and the Gallagher brothers, as well as for VH1, MTV, Radio One, Topman, Virgin. Phew!

The Fine Print: Runs 7.30 – 10.00pm £1pp and prizes for all.

2. The Railway, West Didsbury

Quiz Highlights: If your secret quiz-winning weapon is your dog, then The Railway quiz prize of “free horse riding lessons for any dog” will help you pay back the favour.

The Fine Print: Every Tuesday from 9pm, entry £1.

1. Common Bar, Edge Street

Quiz Highlights: Punning-out its own name to create the title of this themed night, Common Knowledge happens every first and third Wednesday of the month. Quizmasters Dunc and Dan put the punters through their paces with rounds which include beer tasting, bros music and general knowledge.

The Fine Print: Every Wednesday, with bar tabs on giveaway. Free entry, but arrive early as it does get busy.
