The Northern Quarter isn’t short of trendy places to hang out, but when a new venue pops up of course you’ll want to check it out.

Wilderness Bar + Kitchen, a three-storey venue for eating, drinking and more, has officially opened – and it’s somewhere every Mancunian should try at least once.

When you first walk in it feels like you’re in somebody’s home. There’s a relaxed vibe to the place and as the name suggests, the furniture looks like it has been taken straight from nature. Think plants everywhere, wooden tables and exposed brick.

The ground floor is an all-day space, where you can walk straight in or book ahead and enjoy after work drinks including house-made cocktails on tap.

Upstairs, a cocktail bar, offering a unique drinking space where the bar is in the centre of the room. Again, you feel like you’re standing in your mate’s living room (in the best possible way). Seasonal small plates are also served for light, after work snacks.

The kitchen team is headed up by James Lord (ex-Manchester House), using only the best ingredients cooked over coals. We had a taster of the small plates menu and it’s fresh, well seasoned and unique in flavour. Even the vegetarian/vegan dishes were substantial and meaty, perfect for sharing around large groups.

Dishes like Pressed Potato topped with Caramelised Onion, Roast Cauliflower served with Pumpkin Seed Butter, and Woodland Mushrooms on Sourdough Bread.

I tried the vegetarian menu for a change, but the meat eaters looked just as impressed.

We ate in the basement Innovation Room, where the table is set within the working kitchen. The space is available to book for a private dining experience and guests can try the tasting menu served by the Head Chef.

Of course, a Northern Quarter venue would not be relevant without some kind of musical element. Mof Gimmers, record buyer at sister site Wilderness Record Store, Withington, will be curating the music offering; booking his favourite DJs and playing new releases, classics and vinyl reissues.

Vinyls are also available to buy throughout the venue, displayed as though in a trendy record store.

If you’re looking for a chilled space to hang out after work, this is your place. Wilderness Bar + Kitchen is open from 11.30am until 12am Sunday – Wednesday, 1am on Thursday and until 2am Friday and Saturday. Food served 12pm – 10pm.
